Hiroshi Yoshida Prints

Hiroshi Yoshida was born in Fukuoka, Japan, in 1876. Influenced by his adoptive father, an oil painter and art teacher, Yoshida began his studies at age 19. He came to the United States for his first exhibition at 1899 at the Detroit Museum of Art; following this, he traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe before presenting his first woodcut at the famous Watanabe Print Workshop.

As with many members of the artistic Yoshida family, his style was a combination of both Western and traditional Japanese influences. He was a primary leader in the shin hanga (new print) movement, wherein the artist is involved in all steps of the printmaking process, alongside the carvers, painters, and designers.
