Arthur Tress (American, b. 1940)

Arthur Tress was born in Brooklyn in 1940 and studied painting and art history at Bard College where he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts. Upon graduation he went to Paris to attend film school and later worked as a photographer in Stockholm's Ethnographic Museum. Tress also traveled extensively and worked as a documentary photographer for V.I.S.T.A.

He has received two New York State Council for the Arts grants in 1971 and again in 1976. He was awarded a National endowment for the Arts grant for his Dream Collector series in 1972. Retrospective exhibitions of his photographs have been held at the Museum of Modern Art in Oxford, England, the Musee de la Photographie in Charleroi, Belgium and the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC. His photographs are in the following collections: Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Whitney Museum of Art, New York,the International Museum of Photography at the George Eastman House in Rochester, NY, the Museum of Fine Art in Houston,Texas,Ê the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris
